When is specialist assessment helpful?

A persistent or growing mass, or unexplained bone pain that does not improve.
A lesion found incidentally on imaging that needs interpretation or follow-up.
A fracture after minor force or through bone that looks abnormal on imaging.
Many masses and lesions are benign; assessment determines their nature and next step.

The diagnostic pathway

Clinical history, examination and review of the original images.
Selecting further imaging or tests according to the lesion’s site and features.
Multidisciplinary discussion when needed.
Biopsy planning by the team that will oversee treatment when a tumor is suspected.

Treatment and limb preservation

Treatment depends entirely on the diagnosis. Some conditions only need observation; others need biopsy, excision or combined oncology care.

Structured surveillance for appropriate benign lesions.
A planned biopsy when imaging cannot establish the diagnosis.
Tumor excision with bone or joint reconstruction when required.
Coordination with medical or radiation oncology and rehabilitation.

Common questions

Is every mass or bone lesion cancer?

No. Many lesions are benign, but determining this requires specialist review of the images and clinical context, and sometimes further testing.

Why should biopsy be planned first?

The biopsy path and location can affect later surgery, so it should be coordinated with an orthopedic oncology team when a lesion is suspicious.
